NAIDOC Week 2019

NAIDOC celebrations were held in the school over the last week of term 2 with a variety of activities organised by our Aboriginal Education Officers and supported by Maclean High Students and staff.

The success of the week is down to the staff, particularly our Aboriginal Education Officers, Sam Kapeen, Deborah Breckenridge, Krystal Randall and Anjanette Warburton.  Also special thanks to all the students at Maclean High School for their interest, participation and assistance throughout our NAIDOC week.

Liza Hamilton

Deputy Principal Instructional Leader – Aboriginal Students.

Throughout the week in Pastoral Care students looked at the theme Voice, Treaty, Truth and what it means on an individual, community, regional and national level.

On Tuesday Year 5 primary school students were invited to participate an Indigenous Games Gala Day on the western oval. The games were officiated by Maclean High School Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies students.

On Thursday Years 7-12 students were invited to participate in workshops that ran throughout the day in the library area and in the quad.

On Monday there was a whole school assembly where students made speeches and performed musical and dance items.

On Wednesday the library was opened to community members to explore past media articles, photographs and publications all documenting the rich and unique history of our area and Aboriginal Education.

This was finished off with a community BBQ for the entire school cooked by parents and community members, all the BBQ food items being donated By Nungera. Thank you very much to those parents who started cooking 1200 sausages from 10am for them to be ready to be devoured by hungry teenagers at lunchtime.
