The RFS (Rural Fire Service) Cadet Program is run in association with the Rural Fire Service to give students the basic skills in bush firefighting as well as developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and qualifications that can be used in later life, whether it’s for work or for joining a volunteer rural fire brigade.
The aim of the program is to:
• Develop an interest in the NSW RFS and its traditions.
• Provide cadets with a knowledge of fire safety and preparedness.
• Develop the qualities of leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance, initiative and team work.
• Encourage cadets to continue service in the NSW RFS or other community service organisations.
• Provide training that can contribute to NSW RFS firefighter and other specialist training.
The program is open to all Year 9 and Year 10 students as a sport option and usually runs in Terms 2 or 3. Maclean High School has had great success with the cadet program in the past with some school cadets going on to become state champions.
