Maclean High School - Year 7 Sport 2022 Information

On Wednesday 2nd February 2022 SPORT will be conducted for all Year 7 students (1.20 pm - 3.10 pm). The Year 7 students will walk to Maclean Pool to complete the Water Safety Guidelines Assessment. Entry cost into the pool is $3.00 to be paid directly to the pool upon entry.

The Water Safety Guidelines for Unstructured Aquatic Activities has been developed through a collaborative process involving the three sectors of education in NSW, peak water safety agencies and the aquatics industry, and in line with the Australian Water Safety Strategy. This is a mandatory requirement.

Unstructured aquatic activities mean the students are participating in activities that involve free swimming in aquatic environments. Examples of this would be excursions such as "Wet and Wild" and swimming at camps NOT at events such as swimming carnivals and PDHPE aquatic lessons because these are structured and supervised activities.

This is a basic water safety test to accommodate unstructured aquatic activities. The assessment involves:

  • Entry- Slide entry into shallow water and walk five metres.

  • Survival swimming - 25m swim with recognisable strokes.

  • Survival Sequence - Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute.

  • Exit - Exit water unassisted.

  • Voice Rescue - Reassure the person, call for assistance, concise instructions given, and maintain eye contact. To be done in pairs.

Students will need to bring swimmers, towel, water bottle and sunscreen and pool entry $3.00 / season pass if applicable.

Maclean High School Swimming Carnival – Date to be advised

Compulsory attendance is required, and participation encouraged. However, children may choose which events they swim in. Scramble swims are held periodically during the day to allow those, who don't want to compete, a chance to cool off.

Year 7 Weekly Sports

  • From Week 4, Term 1 until the end of Term 2: Sports will be conducted in single sex groups and will consist of a rotation through a variety of sports. Sports that are covered could include cricket, oz tag, basketball, hockey, touch, resistance training, Australian Rules football, soccer, and volleyball. This provides an opportunity for our Year 7 students to gain some basic skills across a variety of sports with some of our experienced coaches and be able to be encouraged and guided into suitable MHS teams.

  • Term 3 will involve a rotation of competitions in a variety of team sports held in Maclean.

  • Term 4 will involve student selections from a greater variety of sports in our local area. More information will be handed out before selections in the latter part of Term 3.

Information about groups and schedules for sport each week can be found on the PDHPE noticeboard outside the PDHPE staffroom or ask Mrs Lowe at the PDHPE staffroom. Weekly notices will appear on Sentral where required.

If your child is unable to participate, but still attending sport, on any day please provide a note with a valid reason, date and signature. This is to be given to the teacher at the beginning of sport when their roll is being marked. Maclean High School encourages students, if possible, to remain with their sporting group and take on alternative tasks such as refereeing/umpiring, scoring or games may be modified to accommodate an injured/sick participant.

If your child needs to leave sport before or during the sport afternoon, a valid note needs to be provided to the attendance office by recess, and a sign-out slip will be issued to your child to allow them to leave at the appropriate time. Please do not ring a sport teacher or turn up at a sport to remove your child before ringing the attendance office at school to legally sign your child out. This enables Maclean High School to provide your child with the best possible duty of care.

If at any time a student needs clarification on matters concerning sport, please ask Mrs Lowe or Mr Stewart at the PDHPE staffroom.
