The National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP) is a partnership between Maclean High School, the Yaegl community and Macquarie University (Sydney). For the past 15 years the university staff have been coming to MHS to conduct a series of science demonstrations to the entire Year 7 cohort. Each year indigenous students from years 8 – 12 perform the roll of teacher as they demonstrate different chemistry and biology practicals. In 2019 we had 15 demonstrators lead Year 7 through experiments such as: elephant's toothpaste, finger printing and slime making. Students were also exposed to different Aboriginal artefacts, traditional soap making and tool making.
The student demonstrators did an awesome job, and the staff at MHS and Macquarie University are very proud of their work. Thanks also must go to Deb Breckenridge for her efforts in organising the student demonstrators, to our cleaner Tracy Want for her mammoth work in returning the science labs to pristine conditions and to our Science Lab Technician: Bev Kirkland for her efforts in the set up and clean-up of the many experiments.
